Role of Traditional Agroforestry Systems in Climate Change Mitigation through Carbon Sequestration: An Investigation from the Semi-Arid Region of Pakistan

Several agroforestry systems prevail in different agro-ecological zones of Pakistan, and cover a remarkable area 19.3 million hectares. They not only play an important role slowing down CO2 emissions, but also contribute to mitigating climate change. However, many regions, the relevant effect on overall carbon (C) stock their reliance various factors are quite unidentified. This study was planned assess biomass accumulation C stocks commonly practiced (boundary, bund, scattered, agri-horticulture) constituent land use types (tree + cropland) through non-destructive approach (allometric equations) semi-arid region Punjab, Pakistan. The results showed that highest plant (87.12 t ha?1) increased by 46%, 17%, 78%, 339%, (42.77 49.51%, 20%, 82%, 361% boundary planting system compared agri-horti sole cropland, respectively. soil organic (SOC) at all three depths, 0–15 cm, 15–30 cm & 30–45 found following order: > bund scattered agricultural system, with maximum minimum cropping depths. Overall, total ecosystem’s vegetation (0–30 cm) forested 275 ha?1, equating 37 ha?1 alone. Our highlighted have potential for sequestration. We suggest research investment can be successful way Pakistan achieve some its change mitigation goals.
